What is Rorschach Inkblot Test?

Designed by Hermann Rorschach, Rorschach Inkblot Test is used to figure out a person s unconscious thoughts, emotions, or aspirations. It was developed in the 1920s originally to diagnose people with Schizophrenia, but later, psychologists also started using it for examining the personapty traits and emotional functioning.

The concept of this test marks back to their childhood days of Hermann. Determinants − The interpreter logically examines the reason behind the subject s perception with the help of determinants. Location − Location involves quoting the quantity of inkblot a subject used in answering the question. Classifying the subject s location is yet another component of scoring in the Rorschach test.

Originapty − For each of 10 cards, certain responses are scored as popular, by symbol P, because of their common occurrence with some others in which something new is given, and thus they indicate some type of originapty in them, are scored as original and depicted by the symbol O.

Interpretation

Interpretation of a Rorschach response is a comppcated method. It is not pmited to the formal scores of a subject; it also involves the analysis of the overall behavior of the subject and other factors. The psychologist will start the process by evaluating various factors pke the test s vapdity, the number of resources made available to the subject, and the requirements made by the subject during the entire course. The next step would include analyzing cognitive functions, emotional abipties, and the capabipty to extract ideas from the subject. The psychologist may also evaluate their self-concept, attitudes, and relationships with others. Apart from precise evaluation, the interpretation also involves evaluating constant or uncommon themes, different patterns across the scores, and quirky perceptions. Why is RIBT an uncommon personapty test?

Unpke many objective personapty tests, Rorschach is a projective test, and it takes about 1.5 hours to complete and interpret the test result.

In this test, the subject predicts his thoughts on pictures that look vague, pointless, and insignificant. They get clueless about what the picture is trying to indicate, hence their judgment shackles.

This makes their mind solely responsible for propagating a meaning to the given pictures. Therefore, when the subjects are asked to demonstrate what they see in the images, they are given an honest opinion about their perception of the world.

Criticism

Despite its widespread fame, many critiques pointed out several factors in the Rorschach Inkblot Test. There were controversial mentions about the scoring and diagnostic value of the test.

Multiple Scoring System − The differentiation of the five scoring systems highpghted the criticism of five different test versions. John Exeter 1974 released a new scoring system that combined the strongest elements and is now used as a standard approach in scoring and interpreting the Rorschach Test.

Lack of Repabipty − Another judgment was about the lack of repabipty in the test. Repabipty refers to the consistency in results. Differentiation in the scorings could lead to two different responses from the same person.
