Unit rates and ratios of whole numbers
Rate and Unit Rate
A rate is a ratio that compares different types of quantities. A unit rate describes the number of units of the first type of quantity that corresponds to one unit of the second type of quantity. Some common unit rates are kilometers per hour or miles per hour, cost per item, income per week, etc.
At Jazz Car Rentals, its costs $120 for renting a car for 8 hours. How many dollars it costs to rent a car for an hour?
Solution
Step 1:
For 8 hours, the car rent is $120
Step 2:
For 1 hour, the car rent is
= 120 ÷ 8 = $15
A color printer prints 42 pages in 7 minutes. How many pages are produced in one minute?
Solution
Step 1:
In 7 minutes, number of pages printed 42
Step 2:
For 1 hour, the car rent is
= 42 ÷ 7 = 6
