Finding all numbers with a given absolute value
The absolute value is defined as
|a| = +a, if a is positive
|a| = −a, if a is negative
|0| = 0
So, the absolute of any number (other than 0) is always positive.
Formula
All the numbers with a given absolute value ‘a’ are therefore, a and −a.
Find the absolute value of the following number:
48
Solution
Step 1:
|+48| = 48; |−48| = 48
Step 2:
So, the numbers with given absolute value 48 are +48 and −48.
Find the absolute value of the following number:
33
Solution
Step 1:
|+33| = 33; |−33| = 33
Step 2:
So, the numbers with given absolute value 33 are +33 and −33.
Find the absolute value of the following number:
97
Solution
Step 1:
|+97| = 97; |−97| = 97
