Writing a Decimal Number Given its Name: Advanced
A decimal number has a whole number part and a decimal part separated by decimal point. For example: 56.09821
It can also be a number having only decimal part. For example: 0.00345
Rules for writing a decimal number given its name
We write a decimal point for the word and in the number name.
We write a whole number for the number name before the word and . This is the whole number part of the decimal number.
We write a whole number for the number name after the word and . This is the decimal part of the decimal number.
We see to it that the last digit has the place value given by the decimal unit pke tenths , hundredths and so on.
Example:
Write the decimal seventy-three and twenty six thousandths.
Solution
We write a decimal point for and as "."
We write for seventy-three before and as "73."
We write for twenty-six after and as "0._26"
We see to it that the last digit 6 falls in the thousandths place and write twenty six thousandths as "0.026".
Therefore we write seventy-three and twenty six thousandths as "73.026"
Write the decimal six hundred forty-two and thirteen hundredths.
Solution
Step 1:
We write and as a decimal point "."
Step 2:
We write six hundred forty-two before and as "642."
Step 3:
We write thirteen after and as "0.13"
Step 4:
We see that the last digit 3 is in hundredths place. So thirteen hundredths is "0.13"
Step 5:
Therefore six hundred forty-two and thirteen hundredths is "642.13"
Write the decimal number one hundred twenty-six and nineteen thousandths.
Solution
Step 1:
We write and as a decimal point "."
Step 2:
We write one hundred twenty-six before and as "126."
Step 3:
We write nineteen after and as "0._19"
Step 4:
We see to it that the last digit 9 is in thousandths place. So nineteen thousandths is 0.019.
Step 5:
Therefore one hundred twenty-six and nineteen thousandths is "126.019"
Write the decimal number one thousand one and one hundred four thousandths.
Solution
Step 1:
We write and as a decimal point "."
Step 2:
We write one thousand one before and as "1001."
Step 3:
We write four after and as "0._ _ 4"
Step 4:
We see to it that the last digit 4 is in thousandths place. So four thousandths is 0.004.
Step 5:
Therefore one thousand one and one hundred four thousandths is "1001.004".
